Thiruvananthapuram: Details of the CBI chargesheet in the alleged framing of space scientist Nambi Narayanan in the 1994 ISRO espionage case, which was filed on June 27, has revealed the case was fabricated.

As per the chargesheet, the case was conjured up by police officers S Vijayan and KK Joshua, who were part of the investigation team that probed the spy case after the court denied to extend Nambi Narayanan’s custody for further interrogation, Manorama News reported.

As per the report, the case was registered days after the first arrest was made. Former top cop Siby Mathews, who was the fourth accused in the espionage fabrication case and accused of ordering the alleged torture of Nambi Narayanan, has been named a co-conspirator, Manorama News reported.

The chargesheet cites the doctor’s statement that Nambi Narayanan was exposed to brutal physical torture while in custody.

The Kerala police had registered two cases in October 1994 after Maldivian national Mariyam Rasheeda was arrested in Thiruvananthapuram for allegedly obtaining secret drawings of ISRO rocket engines to sell to Pakistan. As per the chargesheet, then SI Vijayan manhandled Rasheeda.

In 2018, the Supreme Court ordered the constitution of a committee to find out ways and means to take appropriate steps against the erring officials in connection with the espionage case. After considering the report of the D K Jain Committee, the Supreme Court directed CBI in 2021 to take further action following which a case was registered against 18 persons, which included seven Kerala police officers and eleven IB officials.
