Thiruvananthapuram: The strike against the construction of the seaport in Vizhinjam was called off on Monday after the anti-port committee met with the chief minister.

The 138-day agitation saw large-scale chaos and violence in the coastal area, including an attack on the police station and personnel.

During the meeting, the committee put forth four proposals:

1. A judicial inquiry should be conducted into the conflict that happened in Vizhinjam.

2. Residents who lost their homes to rough seas should be given a monthly rent of Rs 8,000.

3. Money for rent should not come from the construction company’s (Adani Group) CSR fund.

4. Local experts must be included in the committee to study coastal erosion in the area.

However, the government did not agree to all of the anti-port committee’s proposals. The rent paid by the government for those who lost their homes will remain at Rs 5,500.

The meeting also did not agree on the inclusion of local experts in the panel to study coastal erosion.

It was agreed that a monitoring committee would be formed under the leadership of the chief secretary. The port secretary will also be a member of the committee.

The government refused to stop the construction of the port. However, the CM promised to conduct an impact study.

On Tuesday evening, the chief secretary and the cabinet sub-committee appointed for the reconciliatory talks met with the anti-port strike committee, following which a discussion was held with the chief minister.
