Kozhikode: Various youth organisations staged a protest on Sunday over the death of a 19-year-old student in a private bus accident at Perambra. The victim, Abdul Jawad—a native of Kuttiyadi—was killed after a speeding bus rammed into his two-wheeler around 4 pm on Saturday near the Kakkad bus stop in Perambra.
Activists from the Youth Congress, SFI, and Youth League staged protests, alleging that a private bus race led to the fatal accident. Protesters clashed with the police while laying siege to the road where the incident occurred. They also laid a wreath on a police jeep, condemning what they called official apathy in taking action against reckless private bus drivers. Police arrested several activists to restore traffic in the area.
Abdul Jawad, a postgraduate student at Calicut University’s regional centre in Chalikkara, met with the accident while heading to the institute from Perambra. According to eyewitnesses, the private bus, named Omega, took a wrong turn and collided with Jawad’s bike. He became trapped under the vehicle and was crushed beneath its wheels, dying on the spot.
His body is currently kept at Perambra EMS Co-operative Hospital. Jawad is survived by his father Abdul Jaleel, mother Muneera, and brother Manaf.
Youth organisations have declared that they will intensify protests in the coming days. A protest march has been announced, demanding action from the police against the bus operators involved.
