Kochi: A migrant labourer died after being struck by Karnataka’s luxury tourist train, the Golden Chariot, as it returned to Kochi after a two-year hiatus. Kamalesh (43) of Uttar Pradesh lost his life when the train, en route to the Cochin Harbour Terminus, a rarely used station on Willingdon Island, hit him.

The accident occurred near the Naval Base. The Harbour police have registered a case in connection with the incident. A railway official stated that the loco pilot informed authorities that the accident occurred when the victim, who was on the phone, unexpectedly crossed the tracks. As the line is rarely used, it is common for people to cross the tracks.

The Harbour Terminus station is located after the Cochin Yard station, where goods trains arrive twice a week. The Golden Chariot train, owned by the Karnataka State Tourism Department and operated by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation, runs on special routes connecting major tourist destinations in South India.
