Nine year old in coma after hit and run incident: Accused arrested after a year

Vadakara: A man has been arrested for a hit and run incident involving a nine yar old girl who was left in come for the past one year. The police apprehended Purameri native Shajeel from Coimbatore airport.
The police earlier issued a lookout notice for the accused, and he will be handed over to Vadakara police. Shajeel has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.The injured girl, Drishana, is undergoing treatment.
The police found the car last December, 10 months after the accident. The incident occured on February 17, 2024, on the national highway near Chorode, Vadakara. The speeding car, KL 18 R 1846, driven by Shejil, hit the girl and her 68 year old grandmother, Baby, while crossing the road. Baby succumbed to her injuries while Drishana remained in coma for one year.
After the accident, Shajeel modified the vehicle and fled the country. A special investigation team collected hundreds of CCTV visuals to locate the car. Old footage was re-examined. Statements were recorded from numerous individuals, and information was sought from workshops.
The insurance claim filed by Shejil after the accident was a crucial turning point in the case. He claimed the car was damaged in a collision with a wall to obtain insurance.
