The Wayanad Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) will probe the alleged bribe-for-job scam linked to the suicide of District Congress Committee (DCC) treasurer N M Vijayan and his bedridden son, Jijesh. The scam is reportedly connected to the Congress-led Sulthan Bathery Urban Cooperative Bank, with Sulthan Bathery MLA I C Balakrishnan named in the allegations.
Documents have surfaced indicating a 2019 agreement in which Vijayan received Rs 30 lakh from Ambalavayal native Peter George, promising a bank job for Peter’s son. The agreement assured a refund with 7 per cent interest if the job was not secured, with Vijayan providing a blank cheque as collateral. Peter George has shared these documents with the media and police. Balakrishnan, however, denied any involvement.
According to his relatives, Vijayan planned to sell his land to settle mounting debts. He allegedly wrote to the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief seeking intervention, but his letter went unanswered. Meanwhile, the CPM accused Congress leaders of exploiting Vijayan financially, pushing him into insurmountable debt.
Vijayan and Jijesh consumed poison at their home in Manichira on December 24. They were rushed to a private hospital, where Vijayan passed away on December 27.
DySP Shaji Varghese of VACB confirmed that initial inquiries are complete, and a detailed investigation will follow, focusing on Vijayan’s financial transactions. Meanwhile, Sulthan Bathery DySP Abdul Shareef is leading a parallel probe after two complaints were filed in the case.
